Abstract

The effect of electric fields on the infrared vibration-libration absorption band of CN- molecules in alkali halides has been measured between 1.2° and 4.2°K. The absorption coefficient decreased for Elight parallel to Eappl. With the assumption of a small tetragonal distortion of the Devonshire potential we can explain these measurements and also specific heat data obtained on RbCl:CN by Harrison et al.
