Abstract

The heterotrimetallic lanthanide(Ln) isopropoxides of the types [Zr2(OPr-i)9]Ln[Al(OPr-i)4]Cl [Ln=La (1a), Pr (1b), Nd (1c), Dy (1d), Ho (1e), Lu (1f)] and [Zr2(OPr-i)9]Ln[Al(OPr-i)4]2 [Ln=La (2a), Pr (2b), Nd (2c)] have been prepared by the reactions (in benzene) of Ln[Zr2(OPr-i)9]Cl2 with KAl(OPr-i)4 in 1:1 and 1:2 molar ratios, respectively. Derivatives of the type [Zr2(OPr-i)9] Ln[Al(OPr-i)4]2 can also be prepared by the reactions of equimolar amounts of Ln[Al(OPr-i)4]2Cl and KZr2-(OPr-i)9 in benzene. All of these novel derivatives are hydrocarbon-soluble, volatile and exhibit monomeric behaviour (ebullioscopically) in benzene. Characterisation of the new derivatives has been carried out by elemental analyses, infrared, NMR, magnetic susceptibility and electronic (Pr, Nd, Ho) spectra as well as molecular weight measurements.
