Abstract

Fatty acids with zirconium tetrachloride give tetracarboxylates directly. With zirconium isopropoxide only oxygen- bridged compounds of the type (R·CO2)3Zr·O·Zr(CO2R)3 are obtained. By studying the latter reaction stepwise, we find that it is straightforward to the dicarboxylate stage, after which side reactions occur. A mechanism is suggested.
