Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to observe the effect of preweaning undernutrition on cadmium-induced metallothionein levels in liver and cadmium distribution in different tissues. Preweaning undernutrition was produced by increasing the litter size. At 21 days of age, both control and undernourished rats received a single intraperitoneal injection of cadmium (0.75 mg Cd2+/kg as CdCl2H2O). Animals were killed and metallothionein levels in liver and cadmium content in different tissues were estimated. Preweaning undernutrition resulted in a significant increase in native metallothionein levels in the liver. Cadmium administration induced metallothionein only in well-nourished rats. Cadmium distribution in different tissues was also significantly altered by preweaning undernutrition.
