Abstract

Amylase activity in two inbreds and their hybrid was studied in sorghum during germination. The hybrid has a higher amylase activity than its parents. When the parental seeds were germinated together in a 1:1 ratio, their amylase activity reached the level of the hybrid. Only one isozyme each was observed in inbred parents, whereas the hybrid had two bands. It is concluded that the study of various processes during germination will help in understanding the mechanism of heterosis.
