Abstract

The presence of a ring current under extremely quiet magnetic conditions is established from an examination of the mean daily horizontal intensity of the Earth's magnetic field over a 37-yr period. With an increase in the index Ap of magnetic activity the horizontal intensity is shown to decrease linearly. Departures from the linear relationship, however, occur when Ap assumes values of about 45 and 90. It is suggested that these departures may be due to increased pressure on the magnetospheric boundary associated with the M-region and flare plasma respectively.
