Abstract

In recent years, a number of systems have been shown to spontaneously assemble on appropriate solid surfaces to form films with thicknesses of molecular dimensions. The special techniques needed to prepare, characterise and study such monolayers are described. The potential applications of these systems as catalysts, sensors, electrooptic and other materials are summarized.
