Abstract

The effect of periodic modulation of the vertical temperature gradient on the Hopf bifurcation in 3He-4He mixtures is studied experimentally. The threshold for the onset of convection is found to be reduced by modulation, with the amount of reduction linearly proportional to the amplitude of modulation. The results can be understood on the basis of a phenomenological model.
