Abstract

Fluorescence from 1,4-amino- and hydroxy-disubstituted 9,10-anthraquinones was quenched by a number of aliphatic and aromatic amines and diamines. The quenching mechanism has been shown to involve electron transfer (ET) from the ground state of the amines to the excited S1 state of the quinones. Bimolecular quenching rate constants have been correlated with the free energy changes of the ET reactions in accordance with Marcus theory.
