Abstract

Semiquinone free radicals, derived from 2-sulphonate, 1,5-disulphonate and 2,6-disulphonate derivatives of 9,10-anthraquinone, have been studied using pulse radiolysis and kinetic absorption spectrophotometry techniques. Spectroscopic characteristics of both neutral and anionic species have been ascertained. Kinetics of formation and decay, reactivity with oxygen and one-electron reduction potential values have been estimated. The semiquinone radicals have been shown to be very stable under suitable pH conditions where the equilibrium (2 semiquinone ⇔ quinone + hydroquinone) lies predominantly to the left. From a measurement of the equilibrium constants at different pH, values of E2 and Em have been calculated.
