The magnetic polarizability of the vacuum due to the presence of the quark degrees of freedom within the hadronic volume is estimated. This is negative, and may cancel the contribution of the valence quarks. An accurate determination of the magnetic polarizability of the proton from low-energy Compton scattering may establish this "empty bag" contribution.
