Abstract

The authors have investigated the filamentation instability of high-frequency electromagnetic waves in an inhomogeneous magnetized plasma with beta >m/M (the electron to ion mass ratio). For sufficiently long parallel wavelength in such plasmas, the transverse modulation of the electromagnetic wave gets coupled to drift-Alfven waves and leads to a new kind of filamentation instability, which is not purely growing.
