Abstract

Providing high-quality eye care to all people in a sustainable manner is a major challenge for all eye care organizations in the world. Development of an efficient and effective system is critical. Appropriate infrastructure and Human Resources along with predetermined referral pathways are fundamental to derive optimal outputs and outcomes at primary, secondary and tertiary levels of care. This should be achieved while making such care available, affordable, accessible and acceptable. A 4-tier pyramidal model incorporating these principles will be discussed. The concept of eye care team with each member focusing on a specific task; recruitment of staff from the local communities; and addressing the issues of cost recovery, quality and impact are incorporated into this model. The results from experiences of L.V. Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, India, will be presented.
