Abstract

151Eu Mossbauer and L3-edge measurements have been made on dilute europium alloys Eu0.05Y0.95Pd2Si2, Eu0.05Yb0.95Pd2Si2, Eu0.05La0.95Cu2Si2, Eu0.05Yb0.95Cu2Si2, Eu0.05La0.95NiSi2, and Eu0.05Y0.95NiSi2. We show that Eu ions exhibit valence-fluctuation phenomena in all these hosts. The valence of Eu ions in these hosts seems to be governed by their respective nearest-neighbor distance rather than unit-cell volume. Deviations from this behavior are pointed out and discussed.
