Abstract

The interaction behaviour of particles in a PMMA latex system is examined by calculating the long-wave-limit structure factor S(0), using Baxter's solution for the direct correlation function in the Percus-Yevick equation for a sticky hard-sphere potential. The second virial coefficient and diffusion coefficient of the system have also been calculated from the above potential parameters. The results are in good agreement with those previously obtained by light-scattering techniques, suggesting that the interaction behaviour of such latex systems can be represented satisfactorily by a sticky hard-sphere model.
