Abstract

From Schofield's equations, expressions for the pressure derivatives of the elastic constants have been obtained. For isotropic substances I'1 is shown to be zero while I'2 has been related to C1, the pressure derivative of the bulk modulus. From C1 the acoustic longitudinal and transverse Gruneisen constants have been computed and these are found to be in agreement within less than 6% of the experimental value while the thermal Gruneisen constant is found to be 25% less.
