Abstract

A saturated solution of KMnO4 in pyridine in presence of an excess of KMnO4 reacts with 48% HF to produce K2MnF5.H2O and MnF4.py.H2O. Crystalline MnF4.py.H2O reacts further with 48% HF in presence of M2CO3(M = Na, K and Rb) in 48% HF to yield finally M[MnF5]. The compounds have been characterised by their elemental analyses, room temperature magnetic moment and IR spectral studies. Because of metal-metal exchange interaction through the ligand F the compound K2MnF5.H2O shows an unusually low moment of only 3.33 BM. Structurally important IR bands have been reported and discussed briefly.
