Abstract

Alloy films of ZnS and MgF2 of varying composition were prepared by co-evaporation on substrates maintained at different temperatures. Electron diffraction studies showed that the two materials form solid solutions in each other in the composition range 0-30%. In the intermediate composition range the two materials segregate. The solubility limit was found to be strongly dependent on the temperature of deposition. The shift in the optical absorption edge wasfound to be consistent with the electron diffraction results.
