Abstract

Population variation in dermatoglyphic asymmetry and interdigital diversity is studied among 20 Dhangar castes utilizing three traits, total finger ridge-count (TFRC), absolute total finger ridge-count (ATFRC), and finger pattern intensity index (FPII). The correlations of asymmetry and interdigital diversity with the trait value in individuals are computed for each caste group. ATFRC and FPII shows a pattern different from TFRC. The variations among populations with respect to each of these measures are contrasted with genetic differences among these populations from which we conclude that the patterns of interpopulation variation of asymmetry and interdigital diversity are not exactly in congruence of the pattern of genetic variation whereas the traits themselves depict genetic proximity at this early stage of local genetic differentiation.
