Abstract

Investigations of crustal deformation at Koyna (near Poona) and Dakpathar (near Dehradun) were undertaken as a part of a research programme drawn up by the University of Roorkee. Possible applications of such studies and the general plans to be adopted for field measurements are briefly stated. Details of studies made in the Koyna and Dakpathar regions are given. Tilt observations from these two regions coupled with other relevant data lead to the following interpretations: 1. (1) the earth's surface layer has probably not participated in the earthquake energy release in the Koyna region. 2. (2) the average rate of secular creep across the Nahan thrust is of the order of 0.4 mm/month in the Dakpathar region.
