Abstract

1. 1. A soluble supernatant (105,000 g) of Clarias batrachus head and tail kidney demonstrated high peroxidase activity. The specific activity of the head kidney enzyme was higher than that of the tail kidney enzyme. 2. 2. The pH optimum of the head kidney peroxidase was 4.0 whereas that of the tail kidney was 5.0. 3. 3. H2O2 at a concentration of 4.0 μmoles/ml was inhibitory to tail kidney peroxidase whereas head kidney peroxidase was inhibited at a concentration of 15.0 μmoles/ml. 4. 4. The roles of various peroxidase inhibitors and stimulators on the head and tail kidney peroxidases were studied and compared. 5. 5. Both head and tail kidney peroxidases were active in the peroxidation of iodide to triiodide (I3-) which was measured at 353 nm.
