Abstract

It is demonstrated that the practical range of a beta spectrum (Emax=E) in any material can be obtained from mass absorption coefficient ( μ/ρ) values. It is further shown that a semiempirical relation like μ/ρ =AE-B in which A and B are related to the atomic number Z, of the absorber can be used for determining μ/ρ of any material of known atomic number Z. The β particle ranges are compared with theoretical csda and practical ranges from literature.
