Abstract

Molecular oxygen concentrations obtained from the rocket measurements of the absorption profile of solar Lyman-α radiation, in the upper atmosphere over Thumba (8°33'N, 76°52'E), have been used to derive gas temperatures in the 70-90 km altitude region. A mean reference temperature profile for the daytime mesosphere over Thumba obtained from these measurements shows (1) temperatures lower than those given by the CIRA model and (2) a mesopause around 83 km with a temperature of 175 K.
