Abstract

Hepatic microsomal metabolism of benzo(a)pyrene, a representative carcinogenic polycyclic hydrocarbon and an ubiquitous environmental pollutant was studied in control and vitamin A deprived (10-12 weeks) male rats. Hydroxylation of benzo(a)pyrene to fluorescent phenols was found to be significantly depressed in the deficient animals. The decreased hepatic metabolism may lead to delayed clearance of the carcinogenic chemicals in this condition and thus may explain at least in part the enhanced susceptibility to carcinogenesis in hypovitaminosis A.
