Abstract

We derive a sum rule relating the masses of the four charmonium levels, for each L ≥ 1, which is valid for a wide class of potentials. The 2P-level sum rule predicts the 1P1 mass to be 3561 ± 16 MeV. A phenomenological quark confining potential is suggested on the basis of the 3PJ splittings.
