Abstract

A simple scheme using a single-ion approach has been developed to calculate the total energy of simple metals within the neutral-pseudoatom model. The method has been applied to Al and the results of total energy and cohesive energy are reported. The individual components of the total energy are compared with the self-consistent calculation of Lam and Cohen. The results indicate that the electron charge density in a simple metal such as Al is fairly well reproduced by the neutral-pseudoatom model.
