Abstract

We propose a mechanism for the pairing of electrons at the copper sites on the spine of quasi-one-dimensional Cu-O chains induced by the electronic polarization of the oxygen atoms in the side chains. We use a model Hamiltonian for a cluster of Cu-O chains and calculate the various correlation functions for a wide range of parameters. We examine the conditions for the onset of polarization-induced pairing states. Our results may be relevant to high-Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-x.
