Abstract

The band electron momentum distributions in the 3d transition metals V, Cr, Fe, Ni and Cu are calculated by employing the bandstructure method of Hubbard (1969) and Mijnarends (1967 and 1973). The results are qualitatively analysed in terms of the respective bandstructures and Fermi surfaces and general systematics are pointed out. The analysis shows that the anisotropy in the electron momentum distributions arises mainly from the character of the Fermi surface and the d electron wavefunctions.
