Abstract

A classical impulse approximation is used to calculate the electron impact excitation cross-sections of lithium-likeions and sodium-like ions. A comparison of the results is made with the available quantum mechanical calculations. The excitation rate coefficients are calculated for these ions assuming a Maxwellian distribution for the velocity of the incident electrons.
