Abstract

Solvent refining of metallurgical grade silicon using molten aluminum as solvent has been developed. Various process parameters in solvent refining have been optimised. The transition element impurities have been brought down considerably, to name a few: Fe from 890 to 15 ppm; Ti from 230 to 2 ppm; and Mn from 18 to ± 0.2 ppm.
