Abstract

Mossbauer spectra of anhydrous ferrocyanic acid, H4Fe(CN)6, and other alkali metal ferrocyanides have been studied. A definite quadrupole splitting (ΔEQ) is observed for H4Fe(CN)6 at 292 and 80°K. It is attributed to the presence of hydrogen bonding between the cyanide ligands as already suggested by the i.r., crystallographic and refractometric studies. The isomer shift (δ) decreases with increase in electronegativity indicating a corresponding decrease in 3d-electron density around the iron nucleus.
