Abstract

Experimental results on nonadiabatic leakage of the adiabatically confined charged particles from magnetic mirror traps indicate multiple life times for particles of same energy injected off-axis at a given pitch angle and trapped in the mirror. Experimental observations are in agreement with theoretical model of Varma (1971) which describes the nonadiabatic loss of particles, as the tunnelling of the adiabatic potential by particles of energy lower than the maximum height of the potential.
