Abstract

The recent editorial by Balaram1 on communicating science, mentions about Faraday, candles and flames. The subject of flames and combustion has changed significantly over the last 50 years, simi lar to the developments in other fields of science. Communicating the science of combustion should be on the agenda of educational institutions. Combustion sci ence has relevance over a wide range of applications-from cook stoves to indus trial systems to rocket engines. Some times, in conversations, while attempting to state that something is not complex, we say'it is not rocket science'. It is little realized that designing cook stoves can be even more complex than design ing a rocket, the specifications to which it has to be designed for it to be modern and acceptable, it is far more difficult; I say so since I have engaged my time in dealing with both the subjects over several decades.
