Abstract

Scattering losses due to the discrete grain structure of the recording medium result in increased noise and adversely affect diffraction efficiency in bleached holograms. It is shown how such losses can be reduced by controlled etching of the grains after bleaching, to yield volume phase holograms with very low scattering and high diffraction efficiency.
