Abstract

The structures of akali-metal substituted La2CuO4 have been analyzed by profile refinement of neutron powder diffraction data. At room temperature, La1.8Na0.2CuO4 (Tc ≈ 30 K) has the body-centered tetragonal K2NiF4 structure as found for the akaline-earth metal doped analogs such as La1.85M0.15CuO4 (M = Sr, Ba). Below the superconducting transition temperature, the sodium-containing phase clearly exhibits the orthorhombic La2CuO4 structure. Although the structure of non-superconducting La1.8K0.2CuO4 can be fitted with tetragonal symmetry, there is evidence for a weak orthohombic distortion.
