Abstract

The compositions Bi2Sr3-xYxCu2O8 have been prepared with the structure of superconducting Bi2Sr3-xCaxCu2O8. The range of x in Bi2Sr3-xYxCu2O8 is roughly 0.2 to 1.0 and chemical analysis shows that the CuIII concentration increases with decreasing x. The compositions are superconducting (Tc ~65-72 K) for x = ~0.2 to 0.4. Insulating behavior is observed in the region from x = 0.5 to 1.0. This insulating region would not be expected if the Bi 6p band overlapped the Fermi level, as indicated by recent band structure calculations for Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8.
