Abstract

The following new solid solution series possessing the structure of the superconducting oxide with an ideal formula Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 have been characterized: Bi2-xMxSr3-xYxCu2O8 (M = Pb, Cd), Bi2-xPbxSr2Ca1-xYxCu2O8, and Bi2Sr3-2xNaxYxCu2O8. While the phase exists over a wide composition range in each series, superconductivity arises only over a limited range. The results are interpreted on the basis of a correlation between electronegativity and charge carrier concentration in the superconducting copper oxides.
