Abstract

Measurements are reported of the differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of 49.5 MeV protons by 24Mg and for the inelastic scattering leading to the first six excited states at 1.37, 4.12, 4.23, 5.22, 6.00 and 6.44 MeV. Simple optical-model fits to the elastic data and to polarization values are given. The best fits were obtained for a spin-orbit potential of smaller radius than that of the real central potential. Considerable improvement to the fit was obtained for values of the volume absorption radius and diffuseness which were less than those of the surface absorption potential.
