Abstract

Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is the body's normal method of disposing of unwanted or damaged cells, and represents a crucial step in the life cycle of a cell [1]. Disruption of this process is believed to be associated with tumor growth and resistance to chemotherapy, and so has recently become a major focus of research [2]. While the process is still not completely understood, apoptosis is mediated through a cascade of events induced from extracellular or intracellular signals [3] and converge to induce the activity of a group of enzymes, specifically the caspases, which dismantle the cell once activated.
