Abstract

Using the technique of impedance-mismatch, we have been able to study a high-Z material at high pressures using laser-produced shock waves without the deleterious effect of radiative preheat. Furthermore, measurements of shock-induced luminescence yielded the first experimental determination of the temperature of gold above its Hugoniot melting point and the results corroborated a new equation-of-state derived from first principle, solid and liquid state theories.
