Abstract

Entrapped liquid blobs in the pore space of a packing of equal spheres were made visible by matching the refractive index of the spheres with that of the bulk fluid filling the pore space. By pumping bulk fluid through the surrounding pore space an experimental determination of the curvature difference between the ends of the blobs at the onset of mobilisation was made. This was repeated for blobs with special histories. The probability of blob movement was calculated. Good agreement between the theory and experiments was found.
