Abstract

The effect of the flow of sorrounding liquid on the initial movement of a liquid blob in a packing of spheres was used to test the hypothesis that the capillary meniscus radius of a pore when filling is the same as the largest meniscus radius of the same pore when emptying. The agreement between experiment and theory confirmed this hypothesis and indicated that the multiple interconnections between the pores are instrumental in developing the capillary hysteresis exhibited by an assembly of pores.
