Abstract

This paper deals with an autonomous wind energy conversion system (AWECS) employing a synchronous generator (SG). The voltage and frequency controller (VFC) consists of a voltage source converter (VSC) supported with a battery energy storage system (BESS) at its DC bus. A low pass filter based control algorithm is used to provide switching signals for VFC to achieve frequency control, load leveling, load balancing, a unity power factor operation and an active filtering. Moreover, an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is used to provide the function of stator voltage control. Performance of VFC is demonstrated under wide varying wind speeds and consumer loads.
