Abstract

This paper presents a new configuration of a 48-pulse VSC (voltage source converter) based STATCOM with a constant dc link voltage. The proposed STATCOM configuration consists of two sets of VSCs. The control of the phase angle difference between these two VSCs controls the net ac converter output voltage, thereby controlling the reactive power of the STATCOM. In the control algorithm, a fuzzy logic control algorithm is used in the dc voltage controller and ac terminal voltage controller. The proposed STATCOM is modeled using MATLAB with Simulink Sim Power Systems (SPS) toolboxes and steady and dynamic performances of the STATCOM are presented to validate the proposed STATCOM configuration.
