Abstract

A bidirectional converter based battery control of a SPV (Solar Photovoltaic)-hydro based microgrid system is designed and its performance is simulated in detail. In the proposed standalone microgrid system, the battery capacity is reduced to the order of 50%, which makes the system reliable as well as cost effective. The proposed system is a hydro-PV based isolated microgrid. The proposed system manages the power flow of different sources like hydro and SPV array. However, load levelling is managed through the battery storage system. For achieving the maximum power from the SPV array, an INC (Incremental Conductance) based control technique is utilized. The bidirectional converter is used in the battery control and with the help of this converter the battery capacity is reduced along with DC link voltage regulation. A SCIG (Squirrel Cage Induction Generator) based hydro system has the issues regarding voltage and frequency variation due to sudden load changes. The frequency and voltage controller with a bidirectional converter and BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) is used to take care load changes in this microgrid. Simulated results are demonstrated to validate the design and control of the hydro-PV-battery based microgrid system.
