Abstract

The crystallography, distribution and stability of the interface phase in two commercial α/β titanium alloys has been analysed and the phase shown to have an f.c.c. structure. The Rhodes-Paton model for the formation of this phase in Ti-6A1-4V has been critically evaluated and found to be incompatible with the f.c.c. crystallography of these alloys. An alternative model has been proposed to explain the formation of this phase based on its identification with titanium hydride.
