Abstract

This paper deals with the power factor correction (PFC) in a brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive using a boost-forward single-stage isolated power-factor-corrected power supply (SSIPP). The DC link voltage of the voltage source inverter (VSI) feeding BLDC motor is varied for controlling the speed of a BLDC motor. Moreover, the BLDC motor is commutated electronically such that the six solid state switches of VSI operates in low switching frequency and offers low switching losses. A triple-discontinuous inductor current mode (DICM) of the boost-forward SSIPP is used for DC bus voltage control and PFC is achieved inherently. Performance evaluation of proposed drive is carried out at varying speeds and supply voltages with PFC operation at AC mains. The power quality indices achieved are within the limits of international power quality standard.
