Abstract

This paper discusses the application of Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM) to a small distribution system supplied from 42.5kVA diesel generator. The isolated system is not supported from the grid and is prone to a variety of system disturbances and faults. The shunt compensator is modelled, simulated and its performance is studied under load perturbations. To meet the real power needs, a battery energy storage system (BESS) is also modelled to provide load levelling. Various shunt and short circuit faults are simulated on the system. Reduced size of DSTATCOM is considered by connecting tuned passive devices in conjunction. The simulated results show the effectiveness of DSTATCOM for improving power quality features under steady state as well as fault conditions.
