Abstract

This paper presents a STATCOM (static compensator) based voltage controller for an isolated asynchronous generator (IAG) driven by bio-gas, diesel engine and gasoline and feeding 3-phase 4-wire consumer loads. The proposed controller consists of an IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar junction Transistor) based voltage source converter (VSC) and capacitor at its DC link. The neutral point for the consumer loads is created using a tertiary winding zig-zag transformer. The tertiary winding of zig-zag transformer facilitates the selection of the optimum voltage level of the DC link. The complete system is modeled and simulated using MATLAB and its Simulink and PSB toolboxes. Extensive simulation results are presented to demonstrate the capability of the controller as a harmonic eliminator, a load balancer, alongwith as a voltage controller.
