Abstract

This paper presents an investigation on a small scale, stand-alone wind power generating system employing a capacitor excited squirrel cage asynchronous generator. A solid state controller is used to regulate the generated voltage and frequency to constant values at the generator terminals under various dynamic conditions such as varying wind speeds and varying consumer loads along with its functioning as a harmonic eliminator, a load balancer and a neutral current compensator. The proposed controller is realised using three legs insulated gate bipolar junction transistor (IGBT) based voltage source converter (VSC) and a battery energy storage system (BESS) at its DC bus. The neutral point for the load is created through the mid-point of a pair of capacitors connected in parallel to the BESS. The model of proposed controller is developed in MATLAB using Simulink and PSB (power system block-set) toolboxes and its performance is evaluated to demonstrate its capability.
